Different browsers play different video formats. The three most popular formats are .mp4, .webm, and .ogg. The .mp4 and .webm formats cover all the major browsers. If using HTML5 code simply list the files in order (.mp4 first, it's a iOS glitch) and the browser will choose the format they prefer.
Create MP4 Video
To convert a video to MP4 or to resize an MP4 video, you can use the free program Handbrake - https://handbrake.fr/downloads.php.
- Download and install Handbrake. Open the program.
- Click 'Source' and find the file you want to convert.
- If your side panel isn't open, 'Toggle' it open.
- Click 'Universal'. This will select the .mp4 format.
- Click 'Web Optimized'.
- Click 'Picture Settings'.
- Use this screen to set the size of the image. 640 width is standard.
- Hit 'Start'.
Create WEBM Video
To create webm you need to install the Firefox browser - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/, and then install the Firefogg addon-on - http://firefogg.org/.
- Once Firefoff is installed, refresh your browser. It will say the Firefoff has been installed.
- Click 'Make Web Video'.
- Choose the video to convert. Choose the video you just converted to .mp4. It's already set to the correct size.
- The default settings should be correct. Click 'Encode'.
- Your file is done.
